20+ years’ experience · 1,000+ prostatectomies · Robotic and open prostate surgery

Mr Neil Haldar is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with more than 20 years’ experience in prostate cancer surgery, robotic and open radical prostatectomy, uro-oncology, general urology and paediatric urology. He has performed more than 1,000 radical prostatectomies and over 600 laparoscopic kidney operations and holds an NHS consultant appointment at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. He sees private patients across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, London and the wider UK.

I am a Consultant Urological Surgeon with over 20 years of experience treating urological conditions in adults and children. My practice focuses on uro-oncology — cancers of the prostate, bladder, testes and kidney — and on minimally invasive and robotic surgery using the da Vinci surgical system.

I hold an NHS consultant appointment at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. I see private patients at various locations including The Chiltern Hospital, Great Missenden; The Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow; The Shelburne Hospital, High Wycombe; The Princess Margaret Hospital, Windsor; and Genesiscare Windsor.

My approach

I believe that every patient requires an individualised approach.

In my practice, I provide:

  • Clear, honest, and evidence-based advice
  • Tailored treatment plans
  • Access to all appropriate treatment options
  • Continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery

I aim to ensure that every patient feels fully informed, supported, and confident in their treatment decisions.

Experience and expertise

I have performed more than 1,000 radical prostatectomies and over 600 laparoscopic kidney operations. I specialise in robotic prostatectomy and minimally invasive surgery, with a strong focus on cancer control, careful patient selection and preserving urinary, sexual and general quality of life wherever possible.

I introduced the da Vinci robotic prostate surgery programme at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform single-incision laparoscopic nephrectomy as well as the rectal spacer procedure.

Robotic and open prostatectomy

While robotic prostatectomy is suitable for most patients, some men are not ideal candidates due to previous abdominal surgery, adhesions or complex anatomy.

I offer both robotic and open radical prostatectomy, which allows me to tailor the surgical approach to the individual patient, including men with previous abdominal surgery, adhesions or complex anatomy.

Training and career

I graduated from King’s College School of Medicine and completed my specialist urological training in Oxford. I was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Allinson Foundation Research Fellowship and completed a Master’s degree (MD) in renal transplantation immunology, undertaken at the Nuffield Department of Surgery, University of Oxford.

My research on renal transplant immunogenetics has resulted in publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. I subsequently undertook fellowships at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA and in Nantes, France, developing advanced expertise in laparoscopic and minimally invasive urology.

I have served as a nominated pelvic cancer surgeon for the Thames Valley Cancer Network and have extensive experience in the surgical treatment of prostate and bladder cancer.

Professional Practice and Audit

My practice operates within the clinical governance and quality frameworks of the UK National Health Service and the relevant professional bodies. The following describes the structures that underpin my work for both NHS and private patients:

Multidisciplinary team (MDT) review of every new cancer

Every new cancer diagnosis I manage — whether NHS or private — is discussed at a specialist multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting before any treatment is recommended. This is mandatory under NICE guidance for all UK cancer care and is a fundamental principle of the NHS Cancer Programme. The MDT brings together urological surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, histopathologists, and clinical nurse specialists to review imaging, pathology, and patient factors, and to agree on the most appropriate treatment plan.

National audit participation

Between 2014 and 2019, I submitted my surgical outcomes data to the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) complex operations national audits for radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, and nephrectomy under Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The BAUS national audits captured detailed outcome data for every participating hospital and remain the most comprehensive UK source of audited urological surgery outcomes for that period. The audits were suspended after 2019 and have not, to date, been replaced by an equivalent national programme.

Mr Haldar’s research on vasectomy reliability was published in The Lancet in 2000 and is cited in national urological guidelines and systematic reviews on post-vasectomy semen testing and late failure.

Regulation and indemnity

I am registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and licensed to practise. I hold professional indemnity through one of the UK’s recognised medical defence organisations. I practise at hospitals regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC),

Private practice transparency

My private practice activity is reported through the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN), the Competition and Markets Authority-mandated portal for transparency in UK private healthcare. PHIN publishes consultant-level activity, fees, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) where available.

Beyond medicine

Outside of clinical practice, I am a proud father and an endurance sportsman. I have climbed to 6,400 metres in the Himalayas, cycled across Bhutan, Cuba, and from Bangkok to Saigon, and completed multiple long-distance cycling challenges across the UK. I play golf and tennis regularly. I believe that the physical and mental resilience developed through endurance sport informs the stamina and focus that complex surgery demands.
