Prostate Cancer Surgeon – Mr Neil Haldar

I specialise in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of prostate cancer, with particular expertise in robotic prostatectomy and nerve-sparing surgery.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, and choosing the right specialist is an important part of achieving the best possible outcome. I provide expert assessment, treatment and second opinions for men with prostate cancer across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, West Hertfordshire, London and the wider UK.

My practice focuses on robotic prostatectomy and modern prostate cancer surgery, with the aim of achieving excellent cancer control while preserving urinary continence and erectile function wherever possible. I also help patients understand all available treatment options, including when surgery is the right choice and when another approach may be more appropriate.

My experience in prostate cancer surgery

I have performed more than 1,000 radical prostatectomies and have extensive experience in the surgical treatment of localised and selected locally advanced prostate cancer. My approach is focused not only on removing the cancer effectively, but also on preserving function and supporting recovery after treatment.

I specialise in minimally invasive and robotic techniques, including nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy where appropriate. Surgeon experience and procedural volume are among several factors that may influence outcomes after radical prostatectomy, alongside cancer characteristics, patient factors and surgical technique.

In an era when most prostate cancer surgery is performed robotically, I continue to offer both robotic and open radical prostatectomy for carefully selected patients, including complex cases where a robotic approach may not be appropriate.

Treatment for prostate cancer

Treatment for prostate cancer depends on the grade and stage of the cancer, PSA level, MRI findings, biopsy results, general health and personal priorities of the patient. In some men, active surveillance may be the best option. In others, surgery or radiotherapy may offer the best chance of long-term cancer control.

My role is to help each patient understand the benefits and drawbacks of each approach and decide whether robotic prostatectomy is the right treatment for their individual situation.

For detailed information about diagnosis, staging and all treatment options, see my guide to prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Robotic prostatectomy

Robotic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive operation to remove the prostate gland using the da Vinci robotic system. It offers major advantages for many patients, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less pain, and faster recovery than traditional open surgery.

The magnified view and fine instrument control facilitate precise dissection and nerve-sparing where this is oncologically appropriate.

Complex prostate cancer cases and open prostatectomy

While robotic prostatectomy is suitable for most patients, some men are not ideal candidates due to factors such as previous major abdominal surgery, complex anatomy or specific clinical considerations.

I continue to offer both robotic and open radical prostatectomy, allowing me to assess the surgical approach according to the individual patient’s cancer, anatomy and previous surgery.

This allows me to provide a full range of surgical approaches and tailor treatment to each individual patient.

Expert second opinions for prostate cancer

A second opinion can be extremely valuable after a diagnosis of prostate cancer, particularly if you are deciding between surgery, radiotherapy and surveillance. I provide specialist second opinions for men who want greater clarity about their diagnosis, biopsy findings, MRI results and treatment choices.

In many cases, a second opinion helps confirm the recommended plan. In others, it helps patients understand that there may be another appropriate option.

What happens at your first consultation

At your first consultation, I will review all available information, including your PSA history, MRI and biopsy results if already performed. I will explain your diagnosis clearly, discuss all treatment options including their benefits, risks and likely outcomes, and answer every question you have.

If you decide to proceed with surgery, I will explain the planned approach — robotic or open — the preparation required, what to expect during recovery, and the long-term functional outcomes you can anticipate. There is no obligation and no pressure. My role is to ensure you make the best-informed decision for your individual situation.”

When should you see a prostate cancer surgeon?

You may benefit from seeing a prostate cancer surgeon if:
You have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer
You have been advised to consider surgery
You want a second opinion about your treatment options
You are trying to decide between surgery, radiotherapy or surveillance
You have a raised PSA and need specialist guidance
You want to understand whether robotic prostatectomy is suitable for you
You have been told you can’t have robotic surgery but want an open prostatectomy
I regularly see patients who want clear, expert advice before making an important treatment decision.

What is the best treatment for prostate cancer?

The best treatment depends on the stage and grade of the cancer, PSA level, scan findings, biopsy results, age, general health and patient priorities. Options may include active surveillance, robotic prostatectomy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or a combination of treatments. The right choice is individual and should balance cancer control with quality of life.

When is surgery recommended for prostate cancer?

Surgery is often recommended for men with localised prostate cancer who are fit enough for an operation and want definitive treatment. It may also be suitable for selected men with more complex or higher-risk disease. A specialist assessment is important to determine whether surgery is the best option.

What is robotic prostatectomy?

Robotic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive operation to remove the prostate gland using robotic instruments controlled by the surgeon. It allows more precise surgery, smaller incisions, less blood loss and faster recovery than traditional open surgery for many patients.

Is robotic prostatectomy better than open surgery?

For most patients, robotic prostatectomy offers important advantages over open surgery, including shorter hospital stay, reduced pain, reduced blood loss and faster recovery. It also provides magnified 3D visualisation, which may help with precise nerve-sparing and functional preservation.

How do I choose a prostate cancer surgeon?

It is important to choose a surgeon with substantial experience in prostate cancer surgery and a high procedural volume. Patients should also consider how clearly the surgeon explains treatment options, whether they discuss nerve-sparing, and whether they address outcomes such as continence and erectile function as part of decision-making.

Should I get a second opinion after a prostate cancer diagnosis?

A second opinion is often helpful, especially if you are unsure whether surgery is right for you or if you want to compare surgery with radiotherapy or surveillance. It can provide reassurance and help you make a better-informed treatment decision.
