Robotic prostate surgery at The Clementine Churchill Hospital
The Clementine Churchill Hospital was the first private hospital in the UK to acquire the da Vinci 5 Surgical System.
In August 2026, I performed the hospital’s first robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy using the new system, working alongside the Clementine Churchill theatre team.
You can read more about that milestone in my article on the first robotic prostatectomy at The Clementine Churchill Hospital.
Robotic-assisted surgery is performed through several small abdominal incisions. The surgeon operates from a console beside the patient and directly controls the surgical instruments throughout the procedure. The robot does not operate independently.
The system provides a magnified three-dimensional view of the operative field and highly articulated instruments that allow precise movement within the pelvis.
Technology, however, is only one part of prostate cancer surgery. The cancer’s characteristics, the patient’s anatomy and general health, and the surgeon’s and theatre team’s experience are all important.
The decision to undergo surgery — and the type of surgery offered — should therefore follow an individual assessment rather than simply a choice of surgical platform.
Prostate cancer care at The Clementine Churchill Hospital
The Clementine Churchill Hospital is developing its cancer services through The Blenheim Suite, a dedicated cancer centre due to open in September 2026.
The centre will support patients with a range of cancers, including prostate and other urological cancers, alongside breast, lung and colorectal cancer.
Its aim is to bring together consultant-led care, diagnostic investigations, cancer treatments, clinical nurse specialist support and multidisciplinary team working on one site. Robotic-assisted cancer surgery will also be available where clinically appropriate.
For men being investigated or treated for prostate cancer, this should allow more of their assessment, treatment and follow-up to take place within a coordinated private cancer pathway.
Multidisciplinary cancer care
All newly diagnosed urological cancer cases under my care are discussed through an appropriate multidisciplinary team (MDT). This brings together specialists such as urologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists and specialist nurses to review the diagnosis, imaging and pathology and consider the appropriate treatment options.
I then discuss the MDT recommendations with you in the context of your individual circumstances, priorities and preferences.
Urological conditions I see in Harrow
I assess and treat patients with a wide range of urological problems at The Clementine Churchill Hospital.
These include:
- Newly diagnosed prostate cancer
- Second opinions about prostate cancer treatment
- Raised or rising PSA
- Abnormal prostate MRI findings
- Suspected prostate cancer
- Blood in the urine (haematuria)
- Bladder cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Lower urinary tract symptoms
- Benign prostate enlargement (BPH)
- Scrotal and testicular problems
- Selected paediatric urological problems
- Other general urological conditions
Where appropriate, I can arrange investigations to help establish a diagnosis and discuss the most suitable treatment options.
Prostate cancer second opinions
A prostate cancer diagnosis often involves several possible treatment options rather than one automatically correct approach.
I regularly see men who have already been diagnosed elsewhere and would like a second opinion before deciding on treatment.
This may be particularly useful if you:
- have been advised to consider radical prostatectomy
- are deciding between surgery and radiotherapy
- have been offered active surveillance
- have concerns about the side effects of treatment
- have a large or otherwise complex prostate
- have been told that surgery may be difficult or unsuitable
- simply want another specialist to review the diagnosis before making a decision
For a second-opinion consultation, I can review your PSA history, prostate MRI, biopsy and pathology results, staging investigations and general health.
We can then discuss the different treatment options as they apply to your individual circumstances, including the advantages, disadvantages and likely side effects of each approach.
My experience in prostate cancer surgery
Prostate cancer surgery has been a major part of my consultant practice throughout my career.
My specialist interests include robotic and laparoscopic uro-oncology, and earlier in my career I was involved in establishing robotic prostatectomy services within the NHS.
Across my wider prostate cancer practice, I perform both robotic-assisted and open radical prostatectomy. This means I can choose the surgical approach based on the individual patient, their cancer, and their anatomy, rather than assuming one technique suits everyone.
You can read more about my training and surgical experience on my About Mr Neil Haldar page, and find more information on my research and publications page.
The Blenheim Suite: private cancer care at The Clementine Churchill Hospital
The Blenheim Suite is a dedicated private cancer centre at The Clementine Churchill Hospital in Harrow, due to open in September 2026. It is designed to bring consultant-led care, diagnostic investigations, cancer treatment, clinical nurse specialist support and multidisciplinary team working together on one site.
The centre supports patients with prostate and other urological cancers, alongside breast, lung and colorectal cancer. Patients also have access to robotic-assisted cancer surgery where clinically appropriate, using the hospital’s da Vinci 5 Surgical System.
What this means for men with prostate cancer
For many men, the difficulty after a prostate cancer diagnosis is not a shortage of treatment options. It is the number of separate appointments, investigations and decisions involved in reaching the right treatment plan.
A coordinated cancer centre is intended to reduce that fragmentation. Assessment, imaging review, multidisciplinary team discussion, treatment and follow-up can form part of a more joined-up pathway rather than taking place across several unconnected providers.
In practice, that should mean fewer journeys, less fragmentation between different stages of care and a more coordinated consultant-led pathway.
How I use the centre in my practice
I hold private urology clinics at The Clementine Churchill Hospital and perform robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy there.
In August 2026, I performed the hospital’s first robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy using its da Vinci 5 Surgical System.
All newly diagnosed urological cancers under my care are discussed at an appropriate multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT) before a definitive treatment plan is agreed.
The MDT allows specialists, including urologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, and specialist nurses, to review the relevant findings and treatment options.
I then discuss those recommendations with you in the context of your individual circumstances, priorities and preferences.
Where robotic prostatectomy is the right option, I can perform the operation at The Clementine Churchill Hospital using the da Vinci 5 system.
Where surgery is not the right option, I will say so.
A cancer centre and a surgical robot are reasons to have confidence in the pathway, not reasons to operate.
Is the Blenheim Suite open yet?
The centre is due to open in September 2026.
